ASMAT WOOD - CARVING
Asmat is the name of tribe of the largest and most famous among the many tribes in Papua, Irian-Jaya, Indonesia.
One of the things that makes Asmat wellknown is their very typical traditional wood-carving. Some ornaments/motifs that often become the main theme in the process of sculpting a statue that they do is take the theme of their tribal ancestors called "Mbis".
But often also found ornaments/other motifs that resembles a boat that they called "Wuramon", which they believe as a symbol boat spirits of their ancestors that were brought them to the realm of death.
For natives Asmat, wood-carving art is more an embodiment of their way of doing rituals to commemorate the souls of their ancestors.
Mr. Bimantoro, a wood-carving artist from Central Java who have learned a lot from the artists of the Asmat wood-carving, producing many Asmat wood-carving art work which some of those have been combined with modern style.
